Ultralight Aircraft Kits - The Hawk Arrow II is our two sets offered in kit form, built in the USA or built as an amateur experimental aircraft or ELSA in Canada and the rest of the world The long, streamlined cockpit area has a flat floor, and a low-sloping windshield that provides unobstructed forward visibility. The large tail just balances the long nose, providing excellent yaw stability. The Arrow II wing has a semi-symmetrical airfoil, and streamlined extruded aluminum wing struts. All Hawks include a curved front spar carry-through, which allows for plenty of headroom, even for tall pilots.

The rear seat is higher than the front seat, so the field of view of the rear seat passenger or instructor is less obstructed. Flaps (not flaperons!) are standard equipment on all Hawks, and are very effective in increasing rate of climb and reducing landing speed. At the heart of the Hawk's unique design is its curved tube. The curved riser allows the horizontal stabilizer to be placed above the downwash of the wing, especially when flaps are deployed. Another advantage of the Curve is the short landing gear legs, which make it easier to get in and out of your plane. The curved lift is stronger in torsion than the straight lift, and allows the aircraft to turn for take off and land without the tail hitting the ground.

E/ab Kits Put The 'affordable' In Affordable Sport Flying

The Hawk Arrow II SLSA is our factory built model, based on our popular CGS Hawk Arrow II. From 1992 the Arrow II was used for two-seat training and recreational flying. Now, with Light Sport Aircraft regulations in the US, our SLSA is a legal, affordable option for flying training or flying for fun. For more information on the aircraft's flight characteristics, see our Arrow II page.

Our Hawk Arrow II ELSA is the same aircraft as the SLSA except that it is certified as an experimental aircraft. This means that although the aircraft cannot currently be used for compensation or hire (flight training), it can be delivered in any finished state, from fully equipped to ready-to-fly containers. You can do all the maintenance yourself, and you can even take a 16-hour class, and be certified as an inspection-level Light Sportsman. From this point you can carry out the (annual) condition check yourself. If you want a new Falcon for recreational flying, but aren't interested in building a full kit - and aren't interested in paying someone else for maintenance and annuals on your plane, this is the Hawk for you.

As a point of comparison, our standard Hawk Arrow II is sold as an experimental kit built by a hobbyist. You must make at least 51% of the resource for your own entertainment or education. Once the aircraft has received an Airworthiness Certificate, you can carry out all maintenance on the aircraft - and as a manufacturer, the FAA can issue you a Maintenance Certificate, which allows you to carry out annual condition checks do it yourself

Back to top AeroLite 103 has long been one of the de facto legal pioneers (Part 103 in the US) ultralights on the scene. Pilots are attracted to the excellent handling, tricycle gear and control wheel arrangement. The Aerolite 103 is available as a fully assembled and popular kit. The kit is currently on sale for 4 months. The package is available with a combination of Hirth and MZ engines. Aerolite principal Dennis Carle tells PEOPLE his 6’1″ frame and 220 pounds work well with the Hirth F-33 28-hp engine. The airframe kit currently retails for $13,700 and the Hirth F-33 adds $5,700.

Aerolite has entered the world of green energy with their Sun 'n Fun debut of the all-electric Aerolite 103. Dennis Carle was working with an engineering company and built a brushless electric motor that is so small it looks like a slightly larger prop plant. The motor drivesfrom one to four lithium-ion battery packs, each weighing about 35 pounds. The specially designed motor is made in China, but the battery pack is made in the U.S. Made in

The gas-powered AeroLite 103 required only 40 hours of construction from frame to cab. It is not a pie in the air from the builder and scores of first time builders have proven this to be true. The new all-electric AeroLite 103 requires even less time, as the motor and battery assembly is truly plug and play. All parts are pre-wired with connectors.

After the engineers were done with the protocol, Dennis test flew the fully electric craft and said it exceeded his expectations. Flying with three battery packs, Dennis saw that he did the same thing as the Hirth F-33 with a power of 103. In fact the plane is a little quieter, especially for those on the ground.

The big issue is sustainability. A lot depends on how much you push the plane and how much energy you save. A typical ultralight flight profile, flying at full power, with a reasonable climb and a 40-45 mph cruise, will have a flight time of about an hour, according to Dennis.

Another big question is whether the extra weight of the batteries will make the 103 ineligible for the exemption granted to ultralight aircraft Part 103. Dennis sees this as uncharted territory. FAA regulations relate to gas-powered aircraft. No regulations have been issued regarding electric vessels.

How much does all this cost? Guess early adopters will pay a premium to be the first on their block to get a powered flight without the help of dead dinosaurs. The airframe kit will likely have the same price, $13,700, while the electric motor package will set you back $4,650.

"The complete electric drive system is $9,750, which includes motors, motor motors, 2 batteries, 2 battery chargers, controllers, throttle, cables, etc. (everything you need to get the system implementation). 4 The complete system with battery and 4 chargers costs $13,950.”

The Best 2 Seater Bush Planes

Dennis Carley plans to fly the all-electric AeroLite 103 in Paradise City on Wednesday at 7:15 a.m. ET, and hopefully at other times after that.

Mark Cook attended a three-day coating course offered by Stewart Systems, learning about the company's water-based product range and picking up some tips along the way.

RV-12 builder Dave Martin of Vans was inspired to add wheels to his aircraft after seeing the company's prototype with it.

Martha and Wendell Soulsby begin the operational process of installing systems on their Lancair Evo, from engine and fuel to electrical and landing gear.
